What to Focus on this Holiday Season

Hello Shoppers, the time has come to see if you’ve really been listening.  As we count down the hours left before the shopping scene turns frantic, remember to focus on family, value and ease.  Why these three?  When I think about the past few years and the shopping experiences I’ve had, these words really stand out.

Family – The number one reason people want to shop each year is to buy something for a member of the family.  It could be a lifelong dream gift, needed replacement items or just a token of affection.  The thought we put into buying a gift for a family member is very different from what we would do for someone we work with.  We usually put a limit on what we’ll do for those at work, $10 maybe $20 and heartfelt thanks.  When it comes to mom and dad, we’ll even pool our resources or take out a loan to try and make their eyes light up.   You can do just that if you use a Groupon coupon for Vegas.com to plan a trip for them.  With easily applied savings from your smartphone you can send Mom and Dad to Las Vegas and save as much as 40% off air and hotel packages.

Value – Why do we focus so much on making a list and checking it twice?  We want to make sure we get the best value for our money.  I have a friend who makes jewelry that she sells at the local farmers’ market on the weekend.  She said in the twenty- some years she’s been out there she notices that folks will usually bypass her small jewelry pieces for larger items that have more value to them.  “People like to leave big boxes under the tree,” she said.  “I don’t make that happen.”

One way to add value to your shopping is to use Groupon coupons.  Value is subjective, sure.  You all know someone who still has the clay handprint their child made in kindergarten hung upon the wall because to them it has an intrinsic value that increases as the child grows.  Try to sell it online and you wouldn’t get a nickel for it.

Ease – As much as we hype getting your shopping done early and avoiding the long lines at the store, we still like to take part in a little bit of the excitement that comes from joining in the community that swells up in the mall during the holiday season.  Even circling the parking lot becomes ritual.  Whatever your reason for shopping or cultural background, hearing carols sung in the malls, seeing fancy decorations in the halls and saying Merry Christmas to all make it the most wonderful time of the year.  Happy Shopping!
